Jaime & Ethan’s Pinky Swear Trip: Day 5, Part 1 “Pepperoni, Mushroom, and Pepperoni!”

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2014

Breakfast this morning is in the hotel, we are heading down to Boma. I have heard really good things about the gluten free breakfast here.

We are taken through the buffet and are told what’s safe and what’s not. I ask for Allergy Waffles and gluten free donuts. And… gluten free zebra domes, maybe, please?

I discover I DO NOT LIKE QUINOA!

The difference between a regular zebra dome and a GF zebra dome? The bottom – instead of a slice of cake, it’s a piece of chocolate. I like them better than the regular!!!!

The problem with Boma breakfast is the price, in my opinion. Over $20 a person – we did not eat that much food…

We take a bus over to Downtown Disney and spend a couple hours browsing through all the shops. At around 11:00, we went over to Splitsville, the new bowling alley, and rented a lane for an hour. You are given shoes and menus, but we were going to eat afterwards so we didn’t order anything. By focusing on the bowling, we got 3 full games in during our hour.

She even posed for me!

We had a really great time, although I aggravated a hip injury from over the summer and will limp for the next 3 days. MENTAL NOTE: Bowling should only be done at the END of a vacation!

We have a 1:00 ADR to have lunch here at Splitsville, but we checked in early and they took us (it wasn’t busy on a weekend). We ask to be seated outside.

Splitsville has an extensive gluten free menu! I have been counting down the days until I can try the pizza here. I ordered the Gluten Free + 3 – your choice of three toppings to our GF Cheese: pepperoni, bacon, black olives, broccoli, red peppers, grilled chicken, mushrooms, onions.

I got pepperoni, mushroom, and pepperoni!

Ethan’s lucky I let him try it! And it was a pretty big pizza, but it was so amazing!

Ethan ordered the Steak Fajita Bowl РGrilled marinated steak is served with saut̩ed red and green peppers, onions then drizzled with tataki sauce. Served with sushi rice and cilantro

We are really happy with our Splitsville experience as I limp away to catch a boat to Old Key West. It’s where I own my DVC points, so Ethan wants to look around.

From OKW, we take a bus to the Magic Kingdom. First thing we do is meet Talking Mickey again. This time, Mickey shows me a card trick!

Jaime & Ethan’s Pinky Swear Trip: Day 4, Part 2

On the way out of Animal Kingdom to go back to the hotel to swim, we stop to view a couple animal displays.

We get back to the room and finally get to see giraffes – they come out later in the morning (all my dreams of coffee with giraffes have been shattered so far this trip!)

The giraffes knock the feeder down and a bunch of cattle come over to clean up the mess for them.

We change and head down to the pool. It’s February – the water’s too cold for me! Ethan swims a couple laps and then we head to a hot tub for awhile. We then find a couple of loungers and hit the bar.

We read and relax, but the lifeguards are noisy. Neither of us is a big fan of the entertainment at the pools – I want to relax, not play games. There’s a Bingo game going on and I went back into the water and sat on a wall (only my legs were in the water). There are 2 women sitting a few feet to my left with Bingo cards. They are talking a mile a minute. I can see their cards. As I got up to leave the water, I stopped in front of them.

JAIME: I don’t know why, I think I’m weird, but you missed N43 and it was driving me crazy.

Ethan takes a nap and I spend some time on our balcony. I came in for a few minutes and when I went to go back outside, I’m stopped by this HUGE bug at the door!

Tonight we have late dinner plans. We’re going to the 9:30 showing of Hoop-Dee-Doo Review at Ft. Wilderness. I tell Ethan back in the room that if we hurry, we could go to the Magic Kingdom and meet Talking Mickey before getting on a boat and going to Ft. Wilderness…

So that’s what we did!

Talking Mickey was so cool – I got a little teary (don’t I always?) having an actual (I know!) conversation with him!

Hoop-Dee-Doo is fabulous, as always! We had great seats up by the piano player.

The chef came out to discuss the allergy. The salad was fine for us to eat (I scooped out both our salads before I remembered to take a picture!)

The gluten free cornbread was absolutely amazing! We finished every crumb!

Beans, corn, mashed potatoes – all safe.

We were given grilled chicken instead of fried chicken – it was dry. (and these grill marks look too perfect to me – I think it’s frozen chicken…)

And the ribs were safe for us to eat too. They were good!

And for dessert, we get strawberries and whipped cream instead of strawberry shortcake – I liked it much better! Amazing! We are STUFFED!!!

We had a blast (we were the only couple to raise our hands when they asked for honeymoons and anniversaries, so we had to dance to “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” alone!)

Jaime & Ethan’s Pinky Swear Trip: Day 4, Part 1 “A Different Kind of Disney Duck”

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2014

We’re going to take it easy today. Probably not by design, but it’s what happened. We started the day with going down to The Mara for breakfast. Allergy Mickey Waffles with bacon and a ham & egg sandwich on Udi’s bread.

Mine was the sandwich and it was delicious!

We’re heading back to Animal Kingdom today. We start with the safari. Most of the pictures, again, are the same pictures you always get…

but the zebras lined up like the 3 Caballeros!

Next, we walked the Pangoni Trail before heading to lunch.

I love Yak & Yeti! LOVE. IT.

We both ordered tea

I got the Shaoxing Steak and Shrimp – skirt steak, tempura-battered shrimp, jasmine rice, stir-fried vegetables, chili plum dipping sauce. They grill the shrimp and leave the teriyaki sauce off the steak. It’s amazing!

Ethan got… whatever this is… I’ll have to ask him… (he thinks it’s the duck)

We are stuffed, this was a really good meal. We decide to head back to the resort to spend some time at the pool.

Jaime & Ethan’s Pinky Swear Trip: Day 3, Part 2 “The French Don’t Find You Funny, Dear”

We are walking from Morocco to France now for lunch at Chefs de France. I had made the ADR forever ago when Remy the rat still appeared. We decided to keep it even though he wasn’t there anymore. We stop outside the restaurant and watch the balancing act “Serveur Amusant” perform.

We are seated fairly quickly and the chef comes out to take our order. He appears rushed. He has a thick accent. He and I converse about my wheat allergy and I place my order. He turns to Ethan. My husband stops the chef dead in his tracks.

ETHAN: I think there’s been some confusion. I don’t have a “wheat” allergy, I have a “huit” allergy. I can’t have anything with the Number 8 in it.

The chef doesn’t get it, asks the waitress who had giggled to translate, grunts, and asks for his order.

When he leaves, JAIME: Why? Why do you mess with people who don’t speak English?

Lunch is “just okay”. We get the Disney GF Rolls with ice cold pats of butter.

I don’t see it on the menu right now, but I believe Ethan got a burger. I don’t remember him being impressed. I’m also pretty sure they did not have gluten free pasta this day…

I had the salmon. It was good, but before I was GF, salmon was a treat, now it’s a staple and I’m getting sick of it.

It’ll be a while before we come back here. We head over to Belle’s meet and greet area before continuing to the UK.

We catch part of the World Showcase Players before heading over to the other side of World Showcase. In Mexico, we meet Donald before riding the Gran Fiesta Tour.

Into China for the acrobats –

We see a smidge (Ethan’s word, not mine) of the Sergio show in Italy on our way to America for the Voices of Liberty.

Today is Outdoor Entertainment Day as we watch some kabuki drummers in Japan!

Today is also the Day of Many Meals – here we go again – Late Lunch at Spice Road Table.

We start with a couple of adult beverages… mine wasn’t sweet enough, whatever his was he said he’s had better.

I believe this was a Mediterranean Omelet – with potato and caramelized onions

These are Rice Stuffed Grape Leaves – fried capers, raisins and fresh nutmeg. They looked awful to me – I don’t eat things that look like this…

Ethan said they were served cold and he prefers them warmed.

Okay, mixed grill skewers – Beef and Chicken, with garlic and fresh herbs – food I can recognize…

Ethan isn’t a big dessert fan, but I wanted the pistachio ice cream from the stand next door and they said they could get it for me. This was my favorite part of the meal.

Overall, Spice Road Table was not that great. We haven’t mentioned going back yet.

We catch a performance of the British Invasion (love them!)

Yes, I know that’s just an empty gazebo…

We browse through Mouse Gears and The Art of Disney stores, finding so much we’d love to take home with us! We can’t shop though, how would we pay for all the meals if we did???

I know this post is crazy long, but there’s only a few more pictures, so we’ll stick with it…

We ride Spaceship Earth and it’s time for dinner.

Yes, dinner.

No, I’m not hungry.

We are eating at the Coral Reef. I’m delighted when they seat us at the window! I think this guy might be hungrier than I am right now!

Ethan ordered some kind of fish – rainbow trout? – I ordered lobster bisque (it was nice to get something light that I had wanted to try but normally don’t).

The meal was good – we’ll be back, but the real treat at Coral Reef tonight was the couple at the next table! The 2 tables for 2 were set pretty close together. They were looking at the tank and discussing the fish. The woman made a comment about a fish showing signs of distress and I interrupted because I wanted to see a distressed fish!

We got to talking, and talking, and talking. Their check came and was paid. Our check came and was paid. We kept talking. The restaurant empties. The wait staff cleans the restaurant. Eventually, a security guard came over, all smiles, just to ask if we had cars or needed transportation… IT WAS 11PM!!! The park had closed 2 hours ago! We were not asked to leave, it wasn’t even hinted at, she said enjoy yourselves, we’re holding the busses for each of your resorts. We did wrap it up within a few minutes and she escorted us to the front of the park, chatting with us the entire way.

Ethan and I had our own bus back to Animal Kingdom Lodge – it was a great ending to the night!

Jaime & Ethan’s Pinky Swear Trip: Day 3, Part 1 “Morning Meanderings”

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2014

After getting back to the room to trays of chocolate covered strawberries and zebra domes last night, I really can’t wait to get up this morning and make coffee to go with them! I hop up and immediately sit down. I have 2 huge blisters on the balls of my feet from yesterday. HUGE! Somehow, I manage anyway.

(A bunch of you just yelled “She’s going to EPCOT!!!” didn’t you???)

And, yes, I called dibs on the white chocolate giraffe last night –

Now, this is the life I’m supposed to lead –

Sky is a little clearer today –

Ethan thought the Segway vacuum was the coolest invention!

Today was not a rope drop day – we enjoyed the savannah and treats from the Front Desk. We get to EPCOT and it must be after 10, since the first mention of us doing anything on the handy-dandy itinerary list is a pre-lunch at Lotus Blossom in China (and they don’t open until 11). No, this is not gluten free. There’s some days we’re too hungry to care (little chocolate puffs don’t stay with you very long, delicious though they may be)

So we split a single counter service meal. It’s Chinese food – pretty average.

We meander through the German trains. We like the knocked down people and the lizards the best.

Ethan turned around to take a picture of normal sized stuff.

Morocco – always one of my favorite pavilions – I love that the King of Morocco funded this and sent over artisans to build it. We take a few minutes to explore here.

Yeah, right – Ethan wants to meet Aladdin!

Aladdin had about a 20 minute line. Ethan is getting more relaxed about taking to the characters in character though. :-)

Now can we look at the pavilion?
