Duffy the Bear is one of the newest Disney Characters but he wasn’t created from a Disney movie or story. He was initially introduced in 2002 as “The Disney Bear” for the opening of “Once Upon a Toy” at Downtown Disney. His original back story was about a trip to the Magic Kingdom with Mickey Mouse with some pixie dust being involved.
In 2004-2005, the Tokyo Disney team re-named “The Disney Bear” and created a new back story about Mickey Mouse going on a sea voyage. Minnie Mouse didn’t want Mickey to be lonely so she made him a bear and gave it to him in a duffel bag. Mickey nicknamed the bear “Duffy” (from being in the duffel bag) and took that bear all over the place meeting lots of new people. The rest is history.
Duffy the Bear is all over the parks now. You can get your picture taken with him at his own Friendship Gazebo in Epcot or at Paradise Pier’s Treasures in Paradise in Disney California Adventure Park. You can also purchase your own stuffed Duffy and a different outfit for every occasion. There are outfits for your personal Duffy ranging from PJs to Jedi costumes. Duffy even has his own Facebook page.
Duffy is HUGE in Japan. He has been dubbed the “bear of happiness and luck” on the Tokyo Disney website. And he has a girlfriend, ShellieMay, who can be seen at Tokyo DisneySea, as well as his own stage show called “The My Friend Duffy”.
And you just thought Duffy was a stuffed bear.

No matter how you feel about Disney’s Animal Kingdom, there can be no debate that “Festival of the Lion King” is a gem in the crown of Walt Disney World.
The fun and inspiring show has been entertaining guests for 15 years. With the announcement of “Avatarland”, there has been some question about the future of “Festival of the Lion King”. There is good news though, Disney has announced that “Festival of the Lion King” will be getting a new theatre in the Africa section of Animal Kingdom. The new theater will be west of the existing Harambe Village in Africa. When complete, it will be to the left as you cross the bridge into the Africa section of the park. A new pathway will lead from the Tusker House restaurant area in Africa, toward the new theater.
If you think about it, this is probably a good move as far as theming goes – a show about Africa in the Africa area of the park. My only concern is that this will make an already congested area more congested as the show lets out.
The new “Festival of the Lion King” theater is planned to open in 2014. So far, there is no news if there will be any down time as the show makes the move to the new theater.
